As seen on Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, and The Travel Channel. Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Old City Jail, which housed some of Charleston’s most infamous criminals, 19th-century pirates, and Civil War prisoners. Located on Magazine Street downtown, the Old City Jail operated from 1802 until 1939, and most of the building’s original structures — like the cells and warden’s quarters — remain intact. Explore the cells, hallways, and into the places where Charleston’s worst criminals lived and died. Brace yourself as you hear stories like the legend of Lavinia and John Fisher, hotel owners from the 1800s who supposedly poisoned their guests. Featured on such shows as Ghost Adventures, the story goes that Lavinia’s ghost still, very audibly, haunts the premises.

What Our Guests are Saying
My whole family enjoyed a spine tingling hour at Charleston’s Old City Jail! Our guide was great with the perfect mix of history, humor and ghosts.Paige - Google Reviews
Dang...this was a creepy place. We did our tour at night, so that certainly added to the spookiness. The guide was EXCELLENT. He was well-polished with his stories and the whole thing didn't feel hokey like some of the other ghost tours I have been on.Frequent Flyer - Tripadvisor
We had a blast on this tour! We've always seen this jail tour and never booked it until this trip. It was fun getting to see such a historic place. Definitely recommend doing the night tour as it makes it more creepy. We loved our tour guide as well. Super knowledgeable and made our trip even better.Parrishan33 - Tripadvisor

Frequently Asked Questions
What do the Tour Activity Levels mean?
- EASY – Walking tours are designed for a leisurely pace but may include uneven sidewalks, some stairs and a combination of walking and standing for up to two hours.
- MODERATE – Tours will include a more active pace at times including stairs and uneven terrain. Expect to be on your feet for the duration of the tour covering a minimum of a mile and half of the area.
- ACTIVE – A high physical activity level is required to walk and climb narrow stairs. This tour is not recommended for guests who require canes or walkers.
Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?
Advanced purchase is strongly recommended, as tours often sell out well in advance. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please book well in advance.
What if it rains?
Tours will go on rain or shine. If there is a hurricane in Charleston at the time of the tour, there is no need to show up. We will be busy boarding up windows or throwing a Hurricane Party. (Seriously though, we run in every kind of weather.)
Is the tour wheelchair- and/or stroller-accessible?
Our downtown tours are wheelchair and stroller accessible, but it is advised that all guests take caution navigating the uneven terrain of Charleston.
How many stops?
Guests will make several stops throughout their trip to hear ghost stories, legends and facts about respective sites. Each tour guide’s route is unique, and will feature a number of stops depending on factors such as their route, the weather, and even your questions!
How much walking? Is it a fast paced tour?
Our ghost tours are about 1-1.5 miles in distance, which may vary. We seek to provide you with plenty of stories and legends while keeping a comfortable pace with guests.
Do I need a flashlight?
Your tour guide is equipped with a flashlight to guide the way as well as to gesture and gather attention to objects relevant to their stories.
Is the tour scary?
Different things scare different people. However, these tours are primarily story-based experiences. Nothing should jump out in front of you, and if it does, we recommend you run!
Is it appropriate for kids?
All of our ghost tours are considered family-friendly.
Do we go through a graveyard?
This tour does not, but our Charleston Ghost and Graveyard Tour, Magnolia Cemetery Tour and VIP Ghost Package feature exclusive visits inside of historic graveyards.
What if I am hard of hearing?
Our professional guides are skilled public speakers and work hard to make sure everyone can hear during the tour. If you are hard of hearing, please let your guide know and we’ll ensure you get a front-row seat.
Is parking available?
For Downtown Tours:
There are a few precious metered parking spaces throughout the Historic District, though they require constant feeding. For our 10 pm tours, meter parking is free. Otherwise, we recommend parking in a paid lot, parking at the Visitors Center and riding the Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH), or parking in one of the garages around The City Market. Here are some suggestions:
51 PINCKNEY STREET CHARLESTON, SC 29401
Cumberland Street Garage
82 CUMBERLAND STREET CHARLESTON, SC 29401
Concord/Cumberland Parking Garage
1 CUMBERLAND STREET CHARLESTON, SC 29401
For Mt. Pleasant Tours:
Parking is available at Patriots Point for tours aboard the USS Yorktown.

We believe that recognizing excellent service is a personal matter, though 15-20% of your booking fee is a good rule of thumb. Gratuities for your guide are always appreciated, but never expected.
